Senegal's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
As I walk into the space, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he won’t let go of until after our chat. This serves as a simple symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” states this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His resolve and natural ability won over teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult approval to secure was not a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.
Overcoming Early Hurdles
In time, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.
Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Year and Continental Arrival
That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to the title and earning best player.
Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his family support to maintain his concentration.
Influences and On-Field Identity
Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional skills. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are notable assets. He admits he must to temper his competitive fire, having been sent off early in his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.
Monaco, Mentors and Future Ambitions
With his current club, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.
Currently, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he says, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. He is often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the main top prize in the future.
“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it instills confidence.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the world of football.
